Welcome!

My name is Srdjan Zelic. I was born on August 24, 1959 in Split, Croatia. This is my first attempt to create my web page. I am eager to publish it on the web and that's the reason why I make it simple. I hope I'll find time to work on it and make it more appealing and interesting in the future.

My home town

I was born and I live in Split, Croatia. The city is situated in the middle of the east side of the Adriatic Sea coast. Split celebrates 1700 years of it's existence. It started as the Roman's emperor Diocletian palace. After emperor's death it became state property. In 614 Huns onslaught forced people from nearby city of Salona to use the palace's high walls  as the shelter. Since than city keeps growing. Nowadays it's 200 000 inhabitants enjoy nice climate, rich history and beautiful scenery.

Working on the ship

Being the ship officer is not easy at all. The competition in this line of business is harsh, forcing shipowners to save every penny in order to maintain their position on the market. I worked on all kinds on dry cargo ships including those carrying humans - passenger ships. Bellow you may see an old lady "The Empress" which sailed and still does in Malacca Strait on short "Cruises to nowhere". I have particularly nice memories of that times. That's where my fondness to Malaysia and Singapore started. These are two countries where I spend my vacations.

Last few years I've been working on container ships. The schedule on those ships is extremely hectic, leaving little time for rest. The ship I really like is "Nuernberg Express" which is finest example of the ships from the "Golden Era" of container shipping. Built more than 20 years ago it makes seamen's life on her easier and very comfortable. Working on her is also much easier than on contemporary vessels. She is still competing with new vessels sailing with new name "Genoa Express". On the photo bellow you can see me working on the navigating bridge of a ship in the chart room. This is the place where a navigation officer is checking ship's position against the chart using various methods.
